In any field in which you expect to succeed, you continually work to improve your knowledge base. You read, research, study, and learn everything you can so that you can become the best at what you do. Bodybuilding is no different. You should continually work to become an expert in each of the four major areas:
Training. Nutrition. Supplements (including AAS). Recovery.
As you may already know, each of these areas includes dozens of smaller sub-categories. You could spend a lifetime studying and perhaps become a bona fide expert in a few of the sections – so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t end up with a PhD in each of these areas. What you should do, however, is create a balanced plan of attack, so that you can learn enough about each of these areas to create your own set of rules for success.
Divide up your study
Devote 15 minutes each night to learning about each of the four major aspects of bodybuilding. Read. Ask questions. Watch DVDs.
Take advantage of opportunities
Very often, gyms will have guest speakers, lecturing on popular bodybuilding topics. Take advantage! Prepare ahead of time. Research what he/she will be speaking on. Have advanced questions prepared which will help you to achieve your goals.
Learn from the mistakes and successes of others
When you see someone at the gym that recently lost a lot of size, politely ask him about it. Learn about his cycle, injury, or other reason. Likewise, when see someone who has added a great deal of size, ask him about that too. Always try to have one question in each of the four categories (Training, Nutrition, Supplements (including AAS), & Recovery) on hand so that you can grow your knowledge base in a balanced manner.
Write things down
Create a notepad document or MS Word document containing all the things you learn. While they may seem like common sense things initially, you will forget them over time. Keeping a giant list allows you to organize notes into categories, and develop a well-organized, complete list of information on particular topics.
Email the experts
When you see well-known experts or professionals posting on forums or in magazines, drop them an email. You’d be surprised how many of them will respond to a simple question. It’s quite an ego boost for a stranger to consider their advice valuable enough to consult. Many will provide you valuable advice for free.
Always remember that the most successful bodybuilders follow only a few sets of rules – but they are good rules that were solidified after a long journey of try-and-fail. If you research intelligently, you can save a lot of time as you try to create your own small set of rules which lead to your own bodybuilding success.
