The biceps muscle, also known as the biceps brachii, is located on the forearm. This term is derived from Latin meaning two headed muscle. The bone that the biceps muscle is attached to is known as the radius. It originates on the shoulder blade known as the scapula. The biceps muscle is located in two places on the shoulder blade. These areas of muscle are known as the long head and the short head.
Flexion, or bending of the arm is possible due to the biceps muscle. The second function of the biceps muscle is to turn the hand from a palms-down position to a palms-up position. This action is known as supination.
The biceps muscles are some of the most famous. When people ask others to make a muscle it is usually the biceps muscle that they want to see. There are many different exercises that can be done in order to target the biceps muscle. This includes all three muscles that make up the biceps. This means that all biceps exercises have the same common goal and will target all three areas.
Many lifters and trainers believe there are exercises that will hit each area of the muscle. To some extent, this may be true, but not enough to cause a change. It is not necessary to isolate each muscle. All exercises will sufficiently strengthen the whole biceps muscle group.

The biceps muscle is involved in most major activity in the arm. It is due to this that tendon ruptures often occur. There are risk factors that determine who is most at risk. These factors include being a male of 30 years and over, smoking, and the use of corticosteroid medications. Due to the superficial nature of the biceps tendons, these injuries are easy to fix under normal circumstances.
