If your goal in the gym is something as vague as “big arm muscles”, then you have some learning to do. First off, “big” arms is a completely arbitrary phrase which can mean different things for different people. Some bodybuilders reach the 16-inch mark and are completely content that their arms finally look like those of a man who trains. Others have 19-inch guns and bang their heads up against the wall because they cannot reach that 20-inch mark. Whatever your specific starting and finish lines may be, “big arm muscles” is without a doubt a significant improvement over where you are now. How much of an improvement needs to take place in order for the goal to be reached will depend upon your own perception and set of expectations.
Here are some overall general techniques that you can use to improve the size, shape, and appearance of your arms, which will bring you closer to that vague and still popular goal of “big arm muscles”. Attaining some or all of them will take you closer to the overall goal of a better set of arms.
Add More Inches
The first and most obvious thing that you can and should do to get bigger arms is to further develop the muscles of the biceps, triceps, and forearms. In other words, you should train these muscle groups extremely hard, and do everything within your power to gain muscular weight on your arms. Some definition will be lost while following this choice.
Achieve Greater Definition
Very often, a “cut” arm at 18 inches will appear much larger and defined than a 20-inch arm on a man with a much higher body fat level. Even though the tape measure might put the chubbier arm out front, the eyes (which all bodybuilding judges have from time to time) will give the edge to the arm with deeper etching, shadowing, and shape – which low body fat levels deliver!
Work On Your Symmetry
If you have an incredible set of biceps, but your triceps look relatively untrained in comparison, then you are going to look like a man with some sad, sad arms. However, if you are able to develop both muscle groups, then you will have the advantage over your less than balanced peers. You should determine what is the ideal level of development in all of your major muscle groups, and then train accordingly!
Anabolic Avenues
If and when all else fails and you are truly stumped as to how to gain some mass on your arms, you may be tempted to enter that “dark side” and use anabolic steroids to make gains. Conduct adequate research first, and decide if you are truly cognizant of all the side effects you will face, and the risks you will take. If your genetics are poor and your arms are very small, you can always choose to use pro-hormones or some of the terrific near-steroid products out there which deliver much of the same gains as AAS in the short term, with almost none of the risks.
