Q: I know that nutrition in bodybuilding is 80 percent of a man’s success, but sometimes I have to eat fast food. If you’re on the road – which I am a lot in my job – what can you do to grab a quick bite but still stay true to your eating plan?
A: Fortunately, there are a lot of healthier choices these days at places like McDonald’s and Burger King. Taco Bell is probably my own favorite because I can get a very clean meal. A flour tortilla with grilled steak or chicken, lettuce, tomato and a little cheese and salsa is an awesome meal. You can order those however you like. But you can also get burgers when on a low carb diet and cut out the bun and still stay true to your eating plan. I know that In ‘n’ Out Burger here in California will make you what’s called a “double-double protein style” – it’s two patties and two slices of cheese wrapped in lettuce leaves and it’s perfect for a low carber. If you want even healthier, get a chicken sandwich at Burger King with no cheese or mayo and just lettuce and onions on a whole wheat bun. It’s a great meal and keeps you fairly lean. Wendy’s has salads and baked potatoes. You can order a chicken breast sandwich and plan baked potato, throw out the bun and have a bodybuilding meal you’d have at home.
