Bodybuilders such as Lou Ferrigno and Arnold Schwarzenegger have made the sport of competitive bodybuilding popular. Bodybuilders proudly display their physiques for judges who base their scores on the amount of muscle mass a bodybuilder has. The massive size of bodybuilders has made the sport controversial as rumors of anabolic steroid use have spread.
Since its inception, bodybuilding has grown to include women and teenagers. The idea of women bodybuilders competing dates back to the 1960s. Women bodybuilders competed for such titles as Miss Americana and Miss Physique. Since that time, women bodybuilders have changed the way that women competitors are billed. They have began to get the kind of attention that male bodybuilders get.
Many bodybuilders are viewed by the public as anabolic steroid users. Despite testing performed by the International Federation of Bodybuilders, anabolic steroid abuse continues. The massive size of some of the more well-known bodybuilders has called into question whether the sport will ever be clean.
Bodybuilders compete in one of two fields. Professional bodybuilders have to compete in a number of amateur competitions successfully before being allowed to go professional. Once an amateur bodybuilder is allowed to compete professionally, they earn the right to compete in sanctioned competitions. If a bodybuilder manages to earn a top prize at those events, he is given the chance to compete for Mr. Olympia. Mr. Olympia is the top prize in the world for bodybuilders.
Bodybuilders who opt to compete in natural bodybuilding contests have to submit to regular drug testing for anabolic steroids and other illegal substances. If a bodybuilder in a natural bodybuilding contest is found to using steroids, they are banned from further contests. Natural bodybuilders can submit to either a urine drug test or a lie detector test.
Bodybuilders who compete professionally, perform a series of poses and routines during contests. Judges are looking for condition and symmetry when judging bodybuilders. Many bodybuilders use different methods to increase their muscle mass. Some bodybuilders take months off from competing in an effort to lose body fat and gain muscle. Bodybuilders typically use strength training, specialized nutrition, and sleep to build their bodies up for contests.
