Usually it is not very easy to grasp the sport of bodybuilding and it takes time before you get a full understanding of all the concepts that are involved in this wonderful sport. Below are a few concepts you need to understand with regards to bodybuilding;

1. Weights

If you are working out for the first time using weights then you should use light weights to begin with so that you can understand how to do the movements properly. Once you get comfortable about your doing your movements you can progress to using even harder weights.

Even if you are a veteran bodybuilder the first set are usually taken as warm up session and as such you need to use light weights. Your intention is to jump start the flow of blood into the various muscles and connective tissues. Once you have been able to achieve this then you can add more load to your weight.

2. Sets

During a single exercise the combination of reps are usually referred to as a set. Beginners are usually encourages to begin with 1-2 light sets which are just for warming up before proceeding to do 1-3heavier sets.

3. Reps

A rep is one execution of a single exercise. If you undertake a set of 8 squats consecutively then those are 8 reps. you should ensure that you perform at least 15 reps while in good form during the first three weeks of your training. The only you can be able to do this is if you use light weights. The weight you use should enable you to reach muscle failure and at the same time be able to undertake 15 reps. When you reach the point of muscle failure it simply implies that you cannot be able to reach the required number of reps and maintain proper form at the same time.

4. Proper Form

If you use very heavy weights which hinder your ability to use proper movements when doing the lifting you may end up injuring yourself.

5. Breathing

It is very important that you remember to breathe when you are lifting weights. There are bodybuilders who have ended up passing out because they forgot to breath during there training. You should start each set by first inhaling very deeply and when you are performing the difficult part of the lift you need to exhale. You need to exhale as you push the weight away from your body.

6. You need to rest in between sets

You should ensure that before you undertake the next set you have adequately rested from your previous set. It should take you about one minute for your body to be able to recover in between the sets. Smaller muscles recover more quickly than large muscle groups because they have a low pH level. If you extend your recovery period to more than one minute this could be counterproductive because the muscles will get cold. When this occurs you will end up spending a lot of time in the gym than you have to.
