DHEA Muscle Building

DHEA DHEA Muscle Building

If you’re a veteran of the late 1990s bodybuilding craze, you’ve probably seen some pretty silly and obnoxious marketing with everything from striped spandex training clothing to supplements that were advertised to be out of this world. A decade later, you’re much wiser to the ways of the world. You know that knee-high wrestling shoes won’t make you squat any more weight. You’re well aware of the fact there is no ‘hot stuff’ which will burn fat away overnight. And finally, you probably already know that despite what the number one voice of the bodybuilding supplementation generation said, DHEA does indeed not “feel like Deca”.

Still, DHEA, or 5-Dehydroepiandrosterone, is a hormone which is naturally produced in our bodies, which has an interesting place in bodybuilding supplementation study. Produced naturally by the body, DHEA is a factor which allows other hormones to be produced and activated at more efficient and effective rates. In other words, it is almost a precursor to other hormones. Your body cannot manufacture testosterone as it should – using the HPTA function involving the testes and pituitary gland – if DHEA levels are not adequate.

For this reason, many bodybuilding researchers and weight room gym rats alike spend the decade trying to convince themselves – and customers alike – that DHEA muscle building was a reality. In other words, DHEA supplementation would somehow facilitate steroid-like muscle gains.

For years, massive chemically assisted bodybuilders already using AAS would down handfuls of DHEA in hopes of seeing incredible additional gains. Their results were debatable, of course. Those natural bodybuilders that swore by DHEA muscle building properties found themselves losing weight- in the wallet! However, despite the fact it looked so good on paper and in glossy magazine ads, the real-world verdict was that DHEA simply didn’t provide muscular gains at all on par with actual steroids, or perhaps none at all.

Elderly patients are still being prescribed DHEA. This hormone does become less plentiful in our bodies as we age, but only a very small amount of it is required for muscle building and other body hormone functions. In the elderly, hormone levels drop significantly as the years pass, so very small doses of DHEA will provide some assistance with other hormone actions. However, for the rest of us under the age of 60, the funds we could be using for DHEA muscle building could probably be put to better use elsewhere.
