The fad diets will make your body kick into starvation mode because you are in the real sense starving yourself. Since your muscles are active tissues the body will try to conserve energy by trying to burn them so as to generate energy and live out body fat.

2. You end up gaining weight

When you go on a calorie restrictive diet, your body is going to kick on starvation mode. When this happens you end losing lean body muscles as explained above. This will decrease the rate of your body metabolism causing you to gain weight.
