The old cliché that lack of planning is planning to fail stands true in bodybuilding. Physiologists usually advice body builders to focus their training and dieting to specific gains rather than pursue a comprehensive bodybuilding program that has little of everything.

In focusing a body building, the center of interest lies in identifying a specific body part or muscle group that a body builder would like to build within a specified time frame and then concentrating all workouts and dieting towards the maximal growth of that specific part. Several advantages are attributable to this type of training.

The first advantage is that the body builder can better evaluate the achievements of a bodybuilding routine because gains are measurable and constantly quantified. All energies are concentrated in building one body part and as such, the workouts tend to be more effective than when interest and energies are spread all over. Building one part of the body at a time helps bring gains faster and in greater magnitude than if the ultimate bodybuilding objective is pursued without being broken into smaller, short-term goals.

Different muscle groups require different types of training, different intensity levels, different training equipments, different schedules and frequency and also a different diet. It is only when a body builder focuses exclusively on these specific muscle groups at a time therefore, that he or she can better build each. He or she can tame ands consolidate the training and dieting in the specific requirements of the muscle group, and in turn harness more gains within the specified time frame.

Another advantage of focused training and dieting is the ability of a body builder to identify problem areas and therefore strategize on how to amplify the training towards greater growth. Some people have natural (genetic) limitations towards different areas of bodybuilding such as body fat control, building of abs, consolidating muscle definition in such areas as legs, the back and the stomach regions, dieting and many other sub-parts of bodybuilding training. Focused training therefore helps a body builder identify these trouble spots and then concentrate their training towards eliminating or overcoming the natural limitations.

Focused training requires a body builder to sit down with a pen and paper and draw up the greater picture of his or her bodybuilding program. He or she must identify the ultimate goals and then break down these long-term goals onto smaller goals that can be achieved in relatively shorter time frames. Each of these sub-goals, or short-term objectives should focus in a limited area of bodybuilding such as building a particular muscle group, loosing a specific amount of body fat, gaining a specific poundage in tare weight and such.

These short-term goals should then be tallied accumulatively to add up to the main objective of bodybuilding training or the grand intent of the program. They ought to work as a stairway leading to the ultimate bodybuilding program. They help consolidate and maintain the focus of training in full perspective of that ultimate objective.
