You should make sure that by the end of each session you can say that that was money well spent. The next time you drop your check or cash for the gym membership, you won’t feel like you’re being ripped off. So here is how you can make use of the time you spend in the gym to the last dime.

First of all, save the chit chat for poker night or book club! You went to the gym to exercise every other muscle in your body other than your mouth. If you talked less, you’ll realize that you have energy to take you through to the last exercise. I’m sure that telling a sanguine to keep their mouths shut is like telling them to hold their breath for 50 years. If you simply can’t seem to keep your mouth shut, then try plugging your ears with an iPod at least that should preoccupy you. The more time you spend talking, the less you spend doing the actual workout. If there’s something that annoys the crap out of me is a guy who yells into his phone for almost half an hour. I get the whole “I’m a big guy in the company” but do you really have to make or take business calls while in the gym? Personally I put my phone on silent mode and I only answer emergency calls of which I pick them outside the gym.

Secondly, knowing what you’re going to do in the gym beforehand will save you a lot of time. If you enter the gym without a clue of what you’re supposed to do and which muscle group you’re supposed to work on that day, chances are that you’ll enter the gym and move from one machine to the next one as you satisfy your whims. This is simply a waste of time and is very unproductive. You also fall into the danger of overworking a specific muscle group as you may end up using the same machine and doing the same exercise over and over.

Thirdly train at off peak hour when the traffic in the gym isn’t so heavy. This will give you a chance to access all the equipment without having to wait in line for the next free machine. Also at this time it is possible for you to work with your trainer at more personal level. His attention is on you at least most of the time if not all the time and so he can check your technique. It is better to do one set with the correct technique than do many reps but with the wrong routine. This is simply unproductive and a waste of the precious time you have in the gym.

Finally, get a bottle of water so that you don’t have to go to the fountain to drink some water after every so often. Avoid all sorts of distraction as you will need again to take extra time to regain your focus.
