Have you ever wondered why some of the bigger guys in the gym seem to be able to eat ungodly amounts of food and never seem to gain even a single pound? You have seen their ‘before’ pictures, taken in the years before they added all that muscle. They weren’t all that ripped then. Why is it that they are suddenly able to consume so many calories and stay ripped? Their metabolism. That’s how!
How can knowing this information benefit you as a bodybuilder? You will very soon realize that metabolism is determined by many factors. You control some of them, and some of them you do not. Your body type (mesomorphic, endomorphic, or ectomorphic) determines how much muscle you hold on your frame. Your basal untrained metabolic rate will vary from person to person, but will remain constant within your family. Some factors, including the body’s hormone release patterns, cannot be controlled.
There is one factor which you can manipulate in order to boost your metabolism and burn more body fat when conducting very little activity. This factor, of course, it the amount of lean muscle tissue you carry. All things equal, the person with the most muscle will burn the most calories. You can have two twins with identical genes and lifestyles. One man can be 150 pounds, and the other can be a very lean 225 pounds. The 75 pounds of muscle found on the second twin will mean that he can consume 1000 to 2000 more calories each day, and still retain a low body fat level. Muscle mass is a wonderful thing for getting leaner.
Many people who enter the gym for the first time to lose weight will ignore this fact. They will avoid the weights for fear of “getting too big and strong and muscle-y”. Instead, they will spend their days on the treadmill, making minimal gains but never really adding superior muscle mass in the weight room – an area which could lead to them burning more body fat. Instead, they prefer to do it the hard way.
It’s a good idea to visit a doctor before diving headfirst into any new diet program. Some individuals, although rare, do suffer from improper thyroid function. They find it impossible to gain or lose weight, and it’s not because of their own doing. Instead, they lack the natural metabolic processes needed for fat burning. Your physician can prescribe compounds to solve these problems.
One caveat involves the use of anabolic steroids. If you use Clenbuterol, Anavar, DNP, T3, or even a simple compound such as ECA (ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin), you will be able to further boost your metabolism with very little effort. Some bodybuilders are even able to diet down for a show without altering their diets much, by adding these compounds. It’s not always fair, but it is how the body works. However, combining a clean diet, the presence of plenty of muscle, and fat burners can lead to you becoming very ripped, very quickly.
