Every bodybuilding supplement out there is the first to announce their protein tastes better and is superior in results to all of the rest. But how do you make a decision as to which is actually better? Let’s look at a few of the factors one should consider when selecting

Assays
Many companies voluntarily submit their protein products to independent laboratories which then evaluate the product to ascertain the exact protein and filler content of the product. If the label claims 42 grams of protein per serving, and the laboratory only finds 38 grams of protein per serving, there can be serious consequences. Firms can lose their athletes and magazine relationships, as well as their sales and reputations. Most firms who are willing to send a sealed sample of their product out for testing ensure the findings will be accurate by delivering a wholesome and pure product. Watch out for those firms that don’t allow for assays!

Flavor
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but we all know when something tastes terrible. Today’s cheaper proteins (and all powders sold in the past) often have a very powder-y taste which most bodybuilders don’t enjoy. Those products made with higher quality ingredients and more creative flavors will often taste much better to most. Contact protein companies and ask for sample packets of various flavors – you’d be surprised at how many of them will send you a sample in hopes of securing long-term sales!

Spiking
In the past, some bodybuilding supplement designers would engage in a very reckless practice known as ‘spiking’. They would intentionally add various compounds to their products which would lead to more effective results. The compounds added could range from simple caffeine to Dianabol. With the more frequent practice of testing products today, this doesn’t occur as much. However, particularly when new products come out and samples are flying out left and right in an effort to establish “buzz” or a positive reputation among the curious buying public, this practice is still a possibility.

Word of mouth – sometimes!
It used to be, bodybuilders could ask the opinions of other posters on message boards to find out some honest assessments on products. However, in these days of big dollar message board sponsorships and the trolling of boards by supplement company employees, it is harder than ever to get honest opinions online. Trust those people you know to be unbiased, or go with mass-scale reviews on independent websites.

Casein Vs Whey
Do you need a quick rush of protein following your workout, or do you seek something slow burning that will keep your muscle cells nourished until the morning? Opt for Whey if you use protein mostly during the daytime and prefer food to last you through the night. If you want something to last all night, the much slower-digesting casein protein will be what you want.

The most effective protein powder is the one you are going to consistently use. Take into account all of the above factors – along with price and availability – and make your decision.
