There are two broad categories of vitamins based on how they are absorbed and transported around the body. These two categories are fat soluble vitamins and water soluble vitamins. While it is important that you should meet the daily requirements of all your vitamins, I will caution you against overdosing yourself. You may take the vitamin supplements but strictly stick to the prescription. Most of these vitamins especially the fat soluble ones are toxic to the body if taken in excess amounts. Before you go on a multivitamin supplement cocktail, I will advice you to first of all consult with your nutritionist. On the other hand, deficiencies also have their fare share of adverse effects. The vitamins that are especially linked with the absorption of other minerals will lead to a deficiency of both.
Vitamin A also called retinol is referred to also as the eye vitamin because of its association with night vision especially. It is also essential for the optimal working of the nervous, respiratory and digestive systems as well as for healthy skin. Of more importance to the bodybuilder is its importance in the synthesis of proteins and also in the promotion of muscle growth.
Vitamin B complex is made of 8 other vitamins which are all water soluble. B1 is for the conversion of food into energy together with B5. B1 is also a muscle packing vitamin in the sense that it is required not only protein metabolism but growth as well. B2 leads to healthier skin and the repair of tissue while B3 controls the metabolism of cells and also the absorption of carbohydrates and it also takes part in a huge umber of other body processes. B6 is required for protein synthesis and also for the utilization of carbohydrates.
This is the only vitamin that has been scientifically proven to affect your protein absorption. B9 is responsible for red cell production. B12 is the one that’s required not only for the good functioning of the nervous system but also for the production of genetic material. Vitamin C is one of the important vitamins to bodybuilders and it should be taken every single day. It is a very efficient antioxidant and at the same time it takes part in the metabolism of amino acids and also in the absorption of iron which as you know is important for the transportation of oxygen.
Vitamin D is fat soluble and its main function in relation to bodybuilding is its role in aiding the absorption of calcium. Calcium is a very important mineral especially for weight trainers and a deficiency of calcium will literally break your bones. Vitamin D also aids in the absorption of phosphorus which is also a crucial mineral to bodybuilders especially.
Vitamin E like vitamin C is also a very good antioxidant which also helps in recovery and also in the circulatory system. Vitamin K is important for the clotting process and an excess will be broken down by the body meaning that instances of toxicity due to an excess amount of it in the blood are rare.
