With steroid use comes many sets of risks. These include legal, financial, and health issues. Most of the discussion on side effect of steroid use revolves around the long-term effects of usage, mainly disrupted HPTA function, hair loss, and Gynecomastia. What often isn’t discussed are the set of inherent risks that come from using needles to make injections. Many bodybuilders inject steroid oils into their body on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Users of growth hormone and insulin will make injections multiple times each day. That’s a whole lot of needles breaking the skin of the body. With each successive injection, the likelihood for a ‘bad shot’ increases. They happen to all users at one time or another, and while most of the time they just lead to a little bit of pain, some can lead to a bacterial infection. Knowing the difference between the two is very important.

We’ve all seen shows such as “CSI: Crime Scene Investigators” and others where a murder mystery will leave all the investigators stumped because of a lack of evidence. Eventually, when all other avenues of investigation have been exhausted and the bad guy looks like he’s about to get away, an under-dressed and very witty crime scene investigator will have an “ah-ha!” moment and discover that the murder weapon was air itself, injected into the body. This “Air embolism” style of murder makes for great television and plenty of urban legends about how easy it is to kill a person simply by injecting air into the body, and panics many bodybuilders who use needles as well. Obviously, as a steroid user who injects oil into the body on a regular basis, you will want to know as possible about air embolism. Vials will often keep some air bubbles – will this immediately stop your heart as you’ve seen on television? Let’s check out the science behind it and see just how much oxygen in the bloodstream we can tolerate.

Most body building literature online and in print claims to have miraculous muscle gaining advice that is all a body builder requires to pack up the slabs. Literature about muscle gaining secrets, manuals detailing each and every aspect of body building, testimonies of successful body builders and guideline on ‘how to’ facets of body building are far too available for the average body builder.

In this world, it’s hard to find anything that everyone agrees upon. Even in the world of bodybuilding, where you’d think there would be some unanimity as far as what works and what doesn’t, we just don’t see it. Some bodybuilders swear by certain proteins, and others pledge their allegiance to any and all kinds. Some bodybuilders subscribe to high volume training, and some prefer High-Intensity (HIT) training which limits the sets. Some trainers stick with only heavy compound movements while many others see great gains from machines and cable isolation movements. In a sport where it should be very simple (Lift, eat, sleep, and grow!) there are certainly a wide variety of discrepancies. Except on one thing: All bodybuilders hate shots.
