For both men and women, a set of well-defined triceps is a very common goal. Men enjoy bulging biceps, and women enjoy a svelte upper arm. But both groups, whether their goals are insane mass or just lines and class, desire the look of a cut upper arm, particularly the triceps. When most bodybuilders first enter a gym, their goal isn’t to become ripped. They don’t care about proportions. They could care less about etching definition and striations into muscle groups. Their goal is typically to get BIG. Once they achieve this goal, and compete in a bodybuilding show or two, they begin to realize that while pure unadulterated size is fun to have, it’s the well-built bodybuilders with etched in striations and detail that win bodybuilding shows.

Q: When people call a physique “dense” what do they mean? Is it overall size – the guy is big – or is it something else? I know that sounds stupid, but I guess I always wondered how to define that and what it means.
A: No dumb questions here. We question so we can understand. It’s also a nebulous term that people throw around a lot so it’s good to actually question, “Hey, what do you mean by that? Do you even know?” I remember back in the 80’s and 90’s people threw around the term “Muscle Maturity”.
