Q: Even though I know how important my diet is, I still find myself searching for ways to cheat! When I’m in the grocery checkout line, I can’t help but pick up a Snickers or Hershey’s with almonds and then justify it by telling myself I will just work harder tonight in the gym. I have tried the Detour bars and they aren’t bad. My question is, can you recommend something for a good snack that still solves my craving for chocolate/candy? A: My first thought was a Detour/U-Turn bar. They are about as close as it gets to a candy bar and still have some nutritional value to them. Of course, they aren’t as good (nutrition wise) as traditional protein bar but most traditional protein bars taste like cardboard and would never satisfy a true chocolate ...

Q: What is the rationale behind having five or six meals per day instead of three? A: It’s quite simple really – eating more frequently speeds up your metabolism, allowing you to burn fat faster. This never ending cycle of lean muscularity can be yours if you adopt the lifestyle habit of eating every three waking hours. How, though, can the simple act of eating more speed up your metabolism and allow you to build more muscle? I’m glad you asked. Here are three important ways: (1) The very process of eating and digesting food burns calories. Some foods, in fact, have what are called negative calories (lettuce for instance) – it takes more calories to consume them than they originally ...

Q: I caught the end of a news item the other day saying something about eating apples to shed fat. Any truth to this one? A: My guess is you saw a report on the 3 apples per day plan designed by dietitian and personal trainer Tammi Flynn. Tammi stumbled across the benefits of eating apples to lose body fat when she began encouraging her clients to add more fruit and vegetables to their diet. Washington apples were her first recommendation. Before long her clients began reporting amazing reductions in body fat. It became apparent that the apples were doing something to promote this. So, what is it about apples that make them a good (and cheap) fat loss supplement? Apples are a good source of pectin – a soluble fiber that controls the appetite and helps to lower cholesterol. Apples are also an ...

Whether it is a middle-aged soccer mom, or a young competitive bodybuilder, a goal common among most people in the gym is a faster metabolism. The metabolism controls the basal metabolic rate – or how many calories you burn daily. A high metabolism means we are able to walk around with less body fat, and consume more calories daily while doing so. How can we boost the metabolism? Here are a few tips! Eat Early, Eat Often. When we awake in the morning, our bodies haven’t had any calories in 7 to 9 hours. We are in a state of mini-starvation. The metabolism has slowed. It’s important to immediately restore the metabolism to its pre-sleep rate by eating food within 15 minutes of waking. If your appetite is small, have a small snack – just enough to ...
