If you watched the webcast of the 2009 IFBB Mr. Olympia contest (or followed the results on any of the many websites covering it), you probably noticed Jay Cutler return to the stage with a lifetime best conditioning, and at a very light body weight to boot. He wasn’t the mass monster of years past. In 2003 or 2004, he would have been lucky to grab 6th place with a physique like that. However, in 2009 he won the Sandow trophy with this new level of shape – not size. Even though he still had a certain level of blockiness unavoidable because of his frame, he still managed to win the whole show. It wasn’t only Jay. Look at Branch Warren, Phil Heath, Kai Greene, and Dexter Jackson. They rounded out the top 5, ...
Why do you train? Why do you bodybuild? What gets you up each morning to go to the gym and spend what could be television or internet time sweating with the iron? What is it that keeps you from enjoying the foods you crave, such as ice cream, candy, and cheeseburgers? What is it that forces you to shovel down teaspoon after teaspoon, scoop after scoop of expensive powder which certainly has little taste value? Why do you risk health, freedom, and criminal record buying and using steroids, if you take that route? The answer is simple – you do these things in the name of self-improvement. You do these things because you want to get better. But at what?
For some bodybuilders, the reason they engage in the lifting lifestyle is for performance. ...Posted in: Misc. Articles | | Comments (2)
Let’s pretend you never plan to step foot upon a competitive bodybuilding stage. You train for the purposes of looking and feeling good and performing well (IE: getting stronger). You aren’t all that concerned with symmetry, but you do understand the importance of full body development. You aren’t concerned with getting diced or dropping water, but wearing a decently low body fat level would be nice. Finally, you aren’t going to be covering your body in multiple layers of pro-tan, but you also don’t want to be pasty white. In order to meet these goals outside of the bodybuilding arena, you’re going to have to do a few things each day – after the weightlifting session.
Immediately following your workout, there are several steps you should take to ensure your muscles recover, your body fat levels ...Posted in: Training | | Comments (2)

Q: Can you give me some tips on how to achieve that freaky, ultra defined yet massive look on contest day?
A: Well, that’s a tall order. Lets make a couple of assumptions here – firstly, that you’ve already built an appreciable amount of mass (you wouldn’t be competing otherwise, right?) and secondly, that you’ve spent the last dozen or so weeks dieting down and exercising to strip off as much body fat as possible. With those givens in place, then, lets focus on the last 5 days before the contest. What you do during this time period is critical to your success. So, let’s get started.
There are four key variables that you have to get just right this week. They are carbs, sodium, water and training. You need to make up a wall chart to allow you to pinpoint exactly what ...Posted in: Q&A | | Comments (0)

The smith machine in your gym can be a blessing, and a curse. When used properly, it can deliver an alternative method of hitting muscle groups, and provide safety when no spotter is around to watch your back. On the other hand, it can also hurt your training. Standard free-weight lifting recruits a number of “stabilizer’ muscle groups from around the body which lend support to controlling and balancing the weight being moved. When you bench press, for example, your shoulders, triceps, rib cage, and even back muscle work in stabilization roles to help keep the weight under control and from falling upon your head as you press and lower it. The smith removes many of these muscles from the lift, but also helps to isolate the chest more and challenge you to press more weight ...Posted in: Misc. Articles | | Comments (0)
