One of the most misunderstood concepts in bodybuilding is the notion that more is best. This is a very misconceived line of thought since bodybuilding is best done through the very opposite of this notion. In bodybuilding you should realize that less is more. It is very hard to convince a bodybuilder, mostly the novices that indeed less is best.

Most bodybuilding training involves a fairly straightforward set routine in the gym. You complete a set, you wait 60 to 180 sets, and then you complete another set. This “lift, rest, lift, rest” routine works most of the time. However, as the human body is a highly adaptable organism, over time it does become tougher and tougher to challenge the body into new growth. We can try new exercises, different order of movements, and varying rep ranges. However, after time, even those methods tend to stop delivering results.

Proper recuperation is made up of two separate things; there is specific recuperation and a systemic recuperation. Specific recuperation has to do with the particular muscle group that you are training and how much time you allow between training that particular body part. What seems really popular lately is to train every day and hit each muscle group once per week. This may not be a bad idea. The only problem is the other leg of recuperation; that is systemic recuperation.

Some of the most successful and influential people of our generation sleep very little. It would make sense that a person who only sleeps for 4 hours nightly would have much more time to succeed that his or her counterparts, who crash for 7 to 9 hours nightly. Those extra 3 to 5 hours are half a workday. Men like real estate legend Donald Trump and rap mogul and producer Puff Daddy are known for their extremely short sleeping cycles. Should you try it?

Bodybuilding growth doesn’t occur in the gym, no matter how big and pumped you might feel while training. Bodybuilding growth occurs at home in the 24 to 72 hours following the workout. As you sleep, your body uses nutrients from the food you eat to repair your body from the grueling workout and prepare new muscle growth to handle the workload the next time the body is faced with it.

Q: I am overseas on a career contract and am trying to make progress training, but am suffering insomnia and sleep deprivation (taking meds for that), fighting exhaustion, fighting a disease that is genetic and runs in my family but is manageable, fighting the airborne illnesses that are inherent here in this Asian country and give me cold and flu symptoms at least once a month, and am overweight by 20 pounds. I want to lose weight and get bigger while I'm here. I have six months left but feel like I am not making headway, despite going to the gym 5 days a week and training and doing cardio. What can I do?
