In the real world, more is often better. Have you ever heard anyone complain that they make too much money, or that they have too many girls hitting on them at the club? Not likely. In bodybuilding, this axiom is sometimes true, and sometimes false. Consuming more protein can result in your muscles becoming harder and your recovery times improving. At the same time, consuming too much protein can result in major stomach discomfort and kidney ailments. Consuming more supplements can lead to greater recovery ability – but at the same time too many of them can lead to reduced liver and kidney function as your internal organs strive to maintain the workload you are throwing at them.

Have you been cursed with genetically poor calves? Or, do you have the stomach to admit that you didn’t train them with the utmost intensity and attention during your earlier training days? Whatever the reason, today your calves are nothing to be proud of. You’ve developed a nice upper body, a set of washboard abdominals, and some thighs that really do chafe when you walk. However, after the hundreds or even thousands of times you have stepped foot in the gym, your calves still look untrained.

The calves are a fickle body part. Many bodybuilders, particularly those of African-American descent, are genetically cursed with poor calves. They may have some of the best arms and chests the world has ever seen. But their calves tie in at a very high point, and look small compared to most of their peers. They can train them for decades with little success and often end up resorting to site injections to combat this deficiency.

We all know that nothing can match the quality of workout you obtain when you’re in the weight room 6 to 8 hours per week moving the metal. Let’s be honest – that’s where bodybuilding gains are made. (That, and in the kitchen!) There are a lot of workouts out there which can help to minimize muscle loss during periods of extended rest, or to deal with limiting injuries. However, it should be noted that none of them are going to help you build muscular weight in the same way that lifting weights will. You might get ‘toned’ and you might feel great, but just as with the gimmick machines you see on television infomercials, the gains will not be there.

Lat sweep, or the wing-like appearance of the back which is demonstrated by elite bodybuilders, is something that is very hard for bodybuilders to achieve. The men who display it on a bodybuilding stage have always taken one of three paths to get there. Many are born with it. They are genetically blessed with wide backs and narrow waists. They don’t have to work hard at all for great lat sweep. The second group didn’t initially have it, but were bright enough to start with movements such as chins and lat pulldowns at a very young age, or at a very early point in their training. When their teenage counterparts were benching and completing dumbbell curls, they were repping out on the chin bar, challenging their backs to grow while their bodies were still developing. The third group never had it easy – and had to earn it later in the weight room.

Forearms are greatly overlooked in the field of professional bodybuilding today. In a sport where the winners and losers are separated only by a few points on a score sheet and a few fractions of an inch in terms of their body dimensions, even little on-stage advantage helps. Many bodybuilders intentionally under-develop their forearms in an attempt to make their upper arms and shoulders appear larger when standing next to other athletes. The great champions are above this practice. Men like Ronnie Coleman and Phil Heath, with some of the greatest upper arms in the business, know that highly developed forearms exude a sense of power and thickness in poses such as the side chest and most muscular. They train their forearms hard, and take pride in their thickness and power. Then again, they have been blessed with incredible upper arms, so it may come easier for them than those of us without such genetic advantages.

Are you an intermediate or advanced bodybuilder who just can’t seem to spurn growth in your legs to keep up with that of your upper body? It’s not an uncommon condition to face. In the gyms and bodybuilding stages across the world, you’ll meet many bodybuilders who focused upon their chest and arms in the beginning years of their training, and neglected their legs. When they finally did begin training legs, their upper bodies already had a 1 to 2 year advantage in terms of overall development. They may have worked hard to bring their legs up to par, but they also kept their upper body training at the highest possible intensity. As a result, their legs may have grown, but still have not been able to reach the level of development seen on their upper bodies.
