Lifting weights is an important way to get the definition and body tone that you really want. Adding strength training to your workout routine will make your stronger and get the body type you would really like. Getting proper nutrition and creating a good balance between cardio work and weight training will give you results faster than just concentrating on cardio or dieting.

When people first start to work out, especially to lose weight, they think the most important part is to get as much cardio as they can. This will help but it will not build any muscle so you will not see the results you are expecting. If you want to get muscle tone you need a strength training workout to go with it. This also allow you to vary your workouts and not get bored with just one thing and lose interest and give up and end up back where you started.

Women tend to shy away from the weights because they think that a lifting routine is going to build too much muscle and make them unattractive. However, weight training allows you to tone your entire body and will give you a look that will really please yourself. Building muscle also is a great help in weight loss because muscle will burn fat even when you are at rest.

Another falsehood in weightlifting is you have to spend hours at a time and lift huge amounts of weight to get any kind of results. You do not need to go out and kill yourself with a weight routine to get results. You should start out with lighter weights and concentrate on form and technique and see how much you can handle. After that work your way up to where you want to be. It is important to read up on the subject or work with somebody who has experience to make sure you are doing it properly. The last thing you want to do is hurt yourself and then not be able to do anything.

So just a cardio routine is not going to give you all the results you would like to see, if you add in one or two days a week of strength training you will not only see better result, you will also reach your goals sooner. Once you get into a good workout routine you start to look forward to working out and the benefits to the mind and body are something that will carry you through a lifetime.
