Body building exercise being the best solution to most of our health problems, most people give little thought to the important elements in their diets that do not provide calories to the body. This is considered a big mistake because a diet consists of several vital components that do more to a human being’s body not only provision of energy. It is important to know how important a dietary mineral is when it comes to body building. The top minerals that are important to the body include potassium, zinc, calcium, copper, vanadium, iron, sodium, phosphorus, chromium and magnesium.
Potassium is one of the important electrolytes that are found in the muscle cells and it performs its duties together with sodium in regulating body water levels. Potassium also facilitates the electrical potentials between the muscle cells and nerves which lead to muscle contraction. Potassium is also an important mineral that is involved in glycogen storage. Sodium or potassium imbalance can lead to dehydration, weakness and muscle cramps among others. Basically the potassium intake has never been a problem to several people though the body builders should be aware with the foods that provide it and be familiar with its role in the body as well.
Copper is also very vital to body builders and apart from its involvement in oxygen utilization and transportation, it is shown to increase in the blood stream during the exercise. This shows that copper performs a direct role during the high intensity muscular work and it should be taken in regularly. Another important mineral is vanadium which has perceived effects of vanadyl sulfate. Vanadyl helps in the storage of glycogen on the muscle tissues which in turn facilitates the production of energy especially during the training sessions.
Iron is known as a constituent of hemoglobin and assists in transporting oxygen from one part of the body to another. When it comes to body building, one’s ability to recover faster depends on his or her efficiency of aerobics system. The more oxygen you supply to the working muscles, the faster the muscles can recover. Iron is also very essential for female body builders because they loose some amount of iron during their menstrual cycle. Lack of iron for women bodybuilder may therefore lead to anemia if they do not take the iron intake seriously.
Zinc is also a mineral that is considered the best when it comes to growth as it is involved in all phases of growth. According to the studies, high intensity body building activities leads to excessive loss of zinc from the body therefore as a body builder, one should take in a lot of food that is rich in zinc so that his or her growth may not be stymied. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and is very vital to the body builders since the structural stress from weight training needs a continuous and steady supply of calcium so as to maintain high bone density.
It should be noted that minerals are very critical for peak performances though overdosing on them may lead to a disaster.
