Why in the world would anyone PURPOSELY eat more fats? Why would any bodybuilder actually INTENTIONALLY ingest more fats in his diet? While the general public automatically considers fats to be ‘bad’, they are actually one of the three main macronutrients vital for life and health (the other two macronutrients being protein and carbohydrates). The goal of the bodybuilder is to consume the right kind of fats, and consume the right number of grams daily. This not only contributes to bodybuilding success, but also to overall general health.
Daily Breakdown
Twenty percent of your daily caloric intake should come from fats. If you’re eating 4000 calories per day, that means 800 of your calories should come from fats. This breaks down to almost 200 grams of fat daily!
Food sources In terms of sources, one should consume fats, which come from fish, nuts, olive/canola oil, meat, and other healthy sources. Always read the label, and make sure you are taking in the right kinds of fats – avoid trans- and saturated fats.
Supplementation
If you don’t eat much fish, I would recommend supplementing with fish oil. Make sure it is molecularly distilled. This is very important, as if it’s not molecularly distilled, there is a good chance there are pollutants in it. Also make sure the fish oil is pharmaceutical grade; this will help you to avoid taking tons of pills in a day. The active ingredients in the fish oil you want to look for are called EPA and DHA. Look for the EPA and DHA quantities to be at least 300mg and 150mg per pill. The fish oil product will have the EPA and DHA quantities right on the bottle. If it doesn’t don’t buy it. In terms of how much of the fish oil pills/liquid to take, aim for at least 500-1000mg of EPA and 200-400mg of DHA daily. If you get the right kind of fish oil pills this would be around 2-3 pills a day. If you buy a low-grade fish pill, it would be around 10 pills a day at least.
Benefits of fats Fats are good for the body for a number of reasons. Fats lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol levels. They also feed the brain with nutrients and improve its function. Fats lead to reduced inflammation, a major benefit for heart and cardiovascular functions. Clearer skin, lessened depression, improved various organ functions, and many other reasons round out the list. Fats have many benefits – don’t avoid them.
