Perfect posing
You must be smooth, graceful and agile. You are not as big as the next guy, so you had better move ten times better in order to differentiate yourself from him. Quality CAN beat quantity if it’s presented correctly.
Perfect color
Tanning is often overlooked, especially in local competitions. Make sure your color is dark enough to show off your vascularity and cuts, but not so dark that it looks bad under the lights. Try different shades, check out the theater ahead of time, and do your research. A simple choice of what color to grab
Be ripped and dry
You cannot hold body fat. You cannot hold water. All things equal, the man with more muscle will win the show. But in most cases, all things are not equal. It won’t matter if the other man has ten more pounds of muscle if you are leaner and drier. You will look better. He will just look bigger. Doing cardio all year helps tremendously. Dieting will be easier and it’s very possible you’ll lose less muscle than the other competitors, due to your better starting line.
Know their weaknesses and strengths
It shouldn’t take long for you to notice if the man you’re posing against has any very strong, or very weak, areas. Use this knowledge. Challenge him on the poses you can win, and dodge those that you cannot.
Be marketable
As with all things in life, it’s about money. If you win the show, you’re going to be on their posters for next year. And they want to sell tickets next year. So present yourself as a professional – clean, polite, and smiling.
If the other man has better shape, more muscle, and is leaner, you have an uphill battle on your hands. Natural competitors always face a unique set of challenges in today’s competition. But if you are able to eke out a little of his lead in each round through your presentation and look, you just might end up stealing the show.
