female bodybuilder Understanding Your Muscular VascularityQ:  I have a problem. My body fat levels are decent, yet I see some people with my same body fat – or even higher – but I’m just not as impressive-looking. I don’t have any vascularity. How can I fix this? Is my blood pressure too low?

A: This is a common complaint. Some vascular systems are better developed than others. Usually you’ll see (for lack of a better term) “broader” veins on more experienced bodybuilders, but it’s also largely genetic. Some guys are more vascular. But to increase vascularity, there are a few things you can do. Creatine supplementation will help, as will upping your minerals and sodium/ potassium/ magnesium levels. Take a ZMA and that will help. You might also be on a low carb diet and these guys aren’t. Low carb diets and being “flat” can really make you appear to have zero veins. If you are very depleted in glycogen stores, don’t have enough sodium and water, or haven’t been training long, you don’t have a prayer for looking vascular on that day. So, if it’s just in the gym you’re worried about displaying “good veins” – or it messes with your head while you train, take an NO supplement. Also, you say that you KNOW that those people have your BF or more, but how do you know? Do you really know your own BF level? Keep in mind that you may carry more subcutaneous body fat than actual brown fat stores. So while someone may carry more fat than you, they may have thinner skin.
