Many bodybuilding articles are going to blow smoke up your can by telling you tales of how easy it is to change your currently pathetic thighs into the thickest hamhocks this side of Mustafa Muhammad. The reality is that many of these articles are designed to sell bodybuilding supplements and give hope to people who, unfortunately just aren’t destined to have thighs this large. Here are some questions to ask yourself which can help you to most accurately gauge your potential for making leg mass gains.

How old are you?

If you’re 45 years old, the sad reality is that barring a very heavy cycle of human growth hormone and insulin, the odds of you adding 5 to 6 inches to your thighs are remotely small. Train for cuts, or enjoy the small amounts of size you can add at this point.

How tall are you?

The taller you are, the harder it is going to be for you to add mass to your upper legs. Compare Tom Platz to Toney Freeman at the age of 18. One man was just over 5 foot, and the other was a few inches above 6 foot. While Toney would tower of Tom on the stage, we all know which man went down in history as having the best set of quads in history (that would be platz!) The taller you are, the longer it is going to take for you to develop impressive upper legs.

Is it hard for you to gain mass?

Strict ectomoprhs have a harder time than other body types when it comes to gaining muscle. People who have been blessed with mesomorphic body types add muscle mass much more easily. Determine your body type, and while you shouldn’t let it be a limitation, you should keep it in mind when planning your long term goals.

What do you currently squat?

If you’re at an early age and you only move 200 pounds under the bar, you shouldn’t worry. If you have been training for 15 years and are still struggling to move 200 pounds, then the future doesn’t look all that grand for you!

How many years have you been training?

Sadly, many bodybuilders spend their first three or four years in the weight room only hitting the upper body muscle groups. Their goals at this point include pecs, arms, and the girls that are attracted to them! It’s only later in the training process, when the lifter learns about the many benefits of a balanced physique, that they begin to realize the importance of training legs. They might have the most impressive guns in the gym, but until they develop sets of thighs, hamstrings, and calves, they’re just another guy with some good body parts.

Are you a natural?

If you’re 18 years old and have just begun our training, you are going to be able to develop some decent quads if you train hard, eat right, and devote about ten long years to the leg press and squat rack. If you’re above the age of 30 and hoping to do the same, you may need some anabolic assistance in order to make it happen. Sadly, your natural hormone production is going to decrease from the age of 18 on, until your last day. Once you reach the age of thirty, it becomes very difficult to add any new mass to your frame.
