Can Creatine Monohydrate Cause Hypothyroidism? Print E-mail
ImageQ:  I was just diagnosed as a hypothyroid, and was wondering if creatine monohydrate or CEE can cause hypothyroidism?

A:  Not very likely. Two of us here in the office are hypos - one genuinely and one because he f***ed up one time and kept on taking Cytomel between contests! It's a bitch though, either way. Still, I know that I did not get hypothyroidism from creatine because I continue to take it and it doesn't affect my dosing the least bit. In fact, we've never heard of anyone having thyroid dysfunction because of creatine.  You can overuse anything, however, and doctors aren't officially going to be able to pinpoint supplements as the cause. We're not doctors, but f you think it contributed to your problem, and it's relatively a new thing, then I suggest you take a natural thyroid supportive supplement and stay away from creatine. Eat very very clean, do cardio, and see how you test in a couple of months.  Usually, poor genetics or a predisposition to hypothyroidism is what causes it, or a disease process that occurs.
