Glutamine Works For Everybody Print E-mail
ImageQ:  I was on an Internet discussion board and saw a post about glutamine being one of the very few supplements that actually work but I have no idea what it is.  What is glutamine and why should I use it.  He also said that ZMA was a waste and that a regular $2 zinc vitamin would be the same.  I don’t know what to believe here, can you help?

A: Certainly!  I somewhat agree with him on the glutamine comment.  Glutamine is one of the few supplements that works for everybody.  Considering there are literally thousands of different supplements available right now, there aren’t that many that will work for everyone.  What is gutamine?  Glutamine is what I call a “semi-essential” amino acid; you really don’t need to take it unless your body is under extreme stress.  The kind of stress you put it in when you work out.  It’s these high stress times when your body will use up all its glutamine stores and will rely on your glutamine and your other amino acid supplements to repair the broken down muscle.  That’s also why it’s best to take glutamine right after your workout.

For his ZMA comment I totally disagree.  I actually put ZMA among my top 10 favorite supplements and a $2 zinc supplement is not the same.  The original ZMA formula (by SNAC™ systems) is based on science and is dependant on a specific ratio of zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6.  The point he was maybe trying to make is that if you are taking an MRP, or another supplement with a solid vitamin/mineral combination, you probably don’t need to be taking more zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6 in a stand alone supplement - which makes a lot of sense.  But for me personally, I’ve found that even if I am taking plenty of ZMA through my regular supplementation, I still sleep better and feel better in the morning when I take it alone before I go to bed.
